BMW's all-new 2019 BMW 1-Series hatchback has been spied testing in Europe. BMW will be using their new UKL platform which will make the vehicle powered by its front wheels.
The BMW X1 and 2 Series Active Tourer are already on sale, which means that the new 1 Series hatch won't be the first to use the front-wheel drive platform. However, it will be the first model from the automaker's global core sedan, coupe and hatch range.
With its blue brakes, a dual exhaust system and what looks to be a lowered suspension, it's possible that this test mule is the much-awaited M140i model. This should feature the automaker's xDrive all-wheel-drive system and rival those premium ends of the hot hatch segment.
The spy photos also revealed the extra panels that are attached to the real metal and plastic using black rivets. It just means that BMW isn't yet ready to reveal the goods. The same goes for the taillights, which are provisional at this point, even though the final design of the clusters will likely be the same.
Aside from the styling changes, the hatchback proportions have also been changed. It looks to be wider and longer compared to the ongoing 1 Series and has a more spacious cabin. The disguise on the test mule's front bumper could mean beefier vents for the new 1 Series.
Also, since the new 2019 BMW 1-Series will be using the UKL platform, the ongoing model's straight-six engine will need to make way for a smaller four-cylinder unit likely hooked up exclusively to an xDrive setup. The platform also supports electrification, so a hybrid or battery-electric version will not be impossible.
The new 1 Series will take on the Volkswagen Golf R, Subaru WRX STI, and Ford Focus RS. The vehicle will still need to undergo a lot of testing, so don't expect the new 1 Series to come out soon.
The 2018 BMW 1-Series is anticipated to come out around the second half of 2018. BMW confirmed that they would be canceling the 3-door hatchback version of the new 1 Series, leaving only the 5-door hatchback for the upcoming model.
