53 King Cobras Found In Car, Vietnam Police Arrest Driver, Release Snakes (VIDEO)

Vietnamese police have seized 53 king cobras from a car in Hanoi and arrested the driver according to the Associated Press.

Police officer Dang Van Hanh stated today, April 22, the live snakes were taken to a wildlife rescue center near the capital where they were reportedly treated.

The snakes were then released into the wild by rescue center workers.

The snakes, which were hidden in green sacks according to Hanh, were found in his vehicle on April 19.

Hanh told officers after being arrested that he was paid under $50 to transport the snakes according to the Associated Press. Where Hanh was taking the snakes was not confirmed as of press time.

While the amount may not seem like much, the bounty of even under $50 is a lot for those living in the impoverished location.

King cobras are reportedly the world's longest venomous snake, and can grow up to 5.5 meters, or 18 feet.

The meat of a king cobra is considered a delicacy by most in Vietnam, where hunting and trading snakes is reportedly banned. Snakes can also be preserved in traditional medicines according to the Associated Press.

The skins of king cobras can be used to make belts, shoes, and clothes as well.
