2014 Mazda6 Named Top Safety Pick Plus By IIHS, First Mazda Vehicle To Pass ‘More Demanding” Crash Test (VIDEO)

The all-new 2014 Mazda6 earned a "Top Safety Pick+" by the Insurance Institute for Highway safety this week according to a company press release.

The Mazda6 is the visit company vehicle to earn this honor after receiving a "Good" rating for its performance in the new, "more demanding" frontal moderate overlap, side, roof, and head restraint tests.

The vehicle achieved an "Acceptable" in the new small overlap test as well according to Mazda.

IIHS introduced the small overlap test in 2012 to "improve occupant protection in frontal crashes." The test is designed to replicate what could happen when the front corners of a car collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree.

"Receiving a 'Top Safety Pick+' ranking from IIHS demonstrates Mazda's continued dedication to creating products that offer the highest levels of occupant crash protection combined with being fun to drive," said Mazda President and CEO Jim O'Sullivan in the company press release.

The 2014 Mazda6 comes equipped with the company's new suite of SKYACTIV technologies where the engine, body, transmission and chassis all work together to improve the vehicles driving performance and fuel efficient according to the press release.

The SKYACTIV-chassis and SKYACTIV-body will make sure the vehicle's structure is reinforced, quiet, rigid and able to absorb impact in case of an crash. The SKYACTIV-body is made of 61 percent high-tensile steel, which creates a lighter, stronger body according to Mazda.

Standard safety features found in base models include whiplash-reducing front headrests, six airbags, power-assisted ventilated front and solid disc brakes and a traction control system. All models also come with ant-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Prices for the 2014 vehicle start at $20,800.
