New Alpine A110 Takes On Porsche 718 Cayman: See What Experts Say In Terms Of Engine, Price

The new Alpine A110 takes on the Porsche 718 Cayman as it makes a grand debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show a few days ago. Let's check out what the experts had to say about the re-born brand and how it can rival the German brand in paper, for now.

First off, the Alpine is relatively 20 cm less compared with the Cayman. To get a clearer picture, it extends up to 4.17 cm, 5 cm longer than the Renault Captur.

Second, thanks to its all-aluminum structure, the new Alpine A110 weighs 564 pounds less than the lightest 718 Cayman. In fact, the French automaker mentioned carbon fiber only twice in a 1500-word press release, referring to the interior trim materials, reports MotorAuthority. Thus, the new Alpine is truly all aluminum platform.

Engine. Power is supplied by Renault, per Alpine tradition, obviously. Under the bonnet, the new Alpine A110 uses a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, capable of producing 252 horses and 236 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels thanks to the 7-speed dual-clutch from Getrag.

Now, even though both vehicles run on the same four cylinders, the new Alpine A110 is faster at 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds than the base Porsche 718 Cayman, clocking in at 4.7 seconds. And this is all due to the lightweight all-aluminum construction of the French vehicle and a weight/power ratio identical to that of the Porsche 718 Cayman: 4.4 kg per horse.

Pricing. The French automaker will kick off the new Alpine A110 sales with a special Premiere Edition model and the new sport version is expected to emerge by the first half of 2018, following the sale of the standard Alpine. The company is set to build around 1,955 models, in reference to the founding date of the automaker.

With a base price of $61,849 (according to today's rates), these vehicles will be available in white, Alpine Blue, and black. Plus, the Premier Edition comes with unique 18-inch Fuchs wheels, matte carbon fiber interior finishes, lightweight sports exhaust, and more.

Verdict.  Meanwhile, according to Julien Jodry of Auto-Moto, although the new Alpine's numbers look promising, these are still on paper. Further, Jodry pointed out if this will be enough to propel the vehicle toward Porsche clientele who specifically have eyes for certain quality requirements.

In the meantime, check out the video below of the new Alpine A110. And stay tuned for more updates on the vehicle to rival the Porsche 718 Cayman.
