IEEE Labels Honda Electro Gyrocator As World's First Map-Based Automotive Navigation System

It had been 30 years since the Honda Electro Gyrocator was introduced as the first map-based automotive navigation system in the automobile industry. However, the years' gap did not prevent IEEE from honoring the carmaker of the revolutionary innovative device that paved the way for future tech features of the vehicles of tomorrow.

President of IEEE, or The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, announced during a commemoration ceremony held last March 2, 2017, that Honda is a remarkable automaker for introducing the breakthrough navigation system. In fact, she offered a milestone plaque to the company, the first of award given to any company in the automotive industry, reported Honda World.

The Honda Electro Gyrocator was that product that paved the way for the global population to get accustomed with map-based automotive navigation systems. Moreover, it was the first automotive company that distributed the product with a global standard that gave birth to numerous technological features found in vehicles.

In other news, Benziga reported that the Honda Electro Gyrocator was first commercialized during 1981. It adopted the direction sensor which was developed as the first practical application of gas-rate gyro sensors for automobiles, a similar feature that can be found with the recent Google Maps smartphone application.

Furthermore, these sensors would detect the direction which the vehicle would most likely take and combining all sensors, the microcomputer would detect the distance of the route and calculate the current position of the vehicle from the destination. Moreover, when the user indicated the current location, the cathode-ray tube will then display the map film which made it easier for drivers to select which path they would like to take.

After 30 years since the product was introduced into the automotive market, the Honda Electro Gyrocator finally received a milestone plaque from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world's largest non-profit organization of technical professionals in the areas of electronics, electrical, communications, and information. In fact, the recognition and award were both the first honorary that any car company received from the likes of the organization.
