2017 GMC Sierra HD Review: The Radar For Those Who Tow Big Trailers For Long Distances

The 2017 GMC Sierra HD is the company's most luxuriously capable and expensive pickup trucks in its segment. It also packs one of the strongest engine, the all-new Duramax. Let's get to know the new giant in the world of trailer-hauling.

AS GMC puts it, their trucks do feel "more professional." With simple exterior lines matched with an all-new functional hood scoop, this giant will eat you up, unless of course you're the one behind the wheel. And yes, the hood scoop has a role to play.

Under the hood of the 2017 GMC Sierra HD is a new 6.6-liter duramax. This engine is 90% all-new and it puts out a class-eating 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque and powers all four wheels. Also, the truck's new diesel engine has new pistons and pins, exhaust and fuel system, cylinder heads, connecting rods, turbocharger, cool plumbing, and crankshaft.

Although there are other trucks out there that put out more torque, but not much horsepower compared with the GMC Sierra HD. The GM wanted to maximize the capability of the engine and focus on the drivability and the towing confidence and 910 lb-ft of torque is where they landed despite it not being their initial target.

In fact, driving-wise, the truck is quiet even towing enough load. There is also some really nice haptic feedback from almost anything you can put your hands on. However, throttle response didn't feel as snappy.

Now, since this is a truck meant for towing trailers and the like, you might have wondered why the 2017 GMC Sierra HD can only tow around 23,000lbs when its competition have gone way above 30,000lbs such as the Ram 3500 and Ford F-350, reports Jalopnik. To put it simply, GMC noted that a majority of buyers don't actually tow above 25,000lbs. So, instead they strategically set on focusing on the towing experience and confidence and not chase the max trailing claim number.

Inside the 2017 GMC Sierra HD is all leather and soft materials. Although these are not new to the brand, you can't help but bathe in the beauty of the details in the plush seats, extra stitching in the trim, and choice materials swathing the interior.

In fact, you can get about every convenience feature that you can get on a high-end German sedan. Such as a heated and cooling seats and heated steering wheel. Also, it features automatic AWD and every other thing that every truck buyers are expecting.

For the exterior, the grille is simply noticeable and aggressive-looking of course. But it was able to pull off a "classic truck" look. With a base price of $58,495 according to AutoBlog, you can't go wrong with a big truck like this.

Overall, the 2017 GMC Sierra HD is undeniably GM's flagship heavy-duty pickup truck that blends comfort and power. If you want a huge pickup that has both aggressiveness and power combined with sophistication, then look no further.
