2017 Volkswagen Golf Review: Practical and Versatile

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf is a top pick in the compact sedan class. It is comfortable, well-made, and reliable. It is a great choice.

Pros and Features. The Golf has a small eco footprint, an economic engine, and good cargo space. It is an excellent compact hatchback.

Its square-off hatchback design provides ample cargo room. The interior has premium high-quality materials. Additionally, its engine is very fuel-efficient and powerful.

Cons. The Golf's automatic transmission does not shift as responsively or intuitively as most of its competitors. In addition, it has less luxury and convenience features offered on most rival hatchbacks.

What's New? For 2017, the two-door Golf no longer exists. Only the four-door hatchback is available. The S model no longer has a sunroof, while the SE and SEL models have both been dropped and replaced by a Wolfsburg Edition trim.

Models. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf hatchback is offered in two models: S and Wolfsburg Edition. There is also an all-electric e-Golf, a sporty Golf GTI, and a high-performance Golf R which are not part of this review.

Both models come with four-doors and either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed AT with a turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine. The turbocharged engine has 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque.

The Golf S includes 15-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, cruise control, and a driver information display. It also has height-adjustable manual front seats, Bluetooth connectivity, an eight-speaker sound system, and VW's Car-Net App-Connect which feature Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink.

The Wolfsburg Edition adds 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights and wipers, keyless entry and ignition, and a sunroof. It also has heated front seats, premium vinyl upholstery, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking.

Verdict. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf is a sweet ride that is very practical and affordable. It has a solid structure, an impeccable interior, capable suspension, and so much more.
