Tesla Fremont Factory To Temporary Shut Down To Prepare For Model 3 Production

Electric car company Tesla has confirmed that its Fremont Factory will temporary close. The temporary closure is to give way to the necessary preparations for the Model 3's production.

Tesla Fremont Factory temporary closure. It was initially reported that the company would begin production and assembly of its Model 3 electric vehicles in July. It was then moved to February. However, at this time, the company is still in the process of preparing orders for the production of the Model 3.

With the timeline having shifted and February having already started, it looks like production date will be moved at a later time. This is also in line with the announcement that the company will be closing down its Fremont plant for a week to expand the capacity of its paint shop and conduct the necessary general maintenance on factory equipment. The closure will affect production for both Model S and Model X vehicles.

It is quite known that the company has encountered downtimes in short durations in the past. The reason has always been to accommodate expanding its assembly line to be capable of higher production which was the case for its Model X electric vehicles back in 2014. The electric car company, however, does not expect the upcoming temporary shutdown to affect first quarter production as it had prepared for it by adding more production days.

A spokesperson for Tesla had stated to The Verge that, "Tesla will begin a brief, planned pause in production for a week in February to prepare for Model 3 production." The same spokesperson further added that the temporary shutdown "will allow Tesla to begin Model 3 production later this year" as initially planned and will also allow production to increase towards 500,000 vehicles per year by 2018. The spokesperson also confirmed that they "do not anticipate this brief pause to have a material impact on our Q1 production or delivery figures, as we have added production days to compensate."
