Ford Introduces Voice-Activated, Location-Sharing Glympse Smartphone App (VIDEO)

Glympse Inc. announced this week that they are working with Ford Motors to help release vehicles that will come equipped with a location-sharing app to share the driver's location with friends and family members. Using AppLink, drivers can alert other people where they are by using voice commands, eliminating the urge to text someone the same information.

Ford released the news in a company press release this week. Click here to see the full press release.

"People typically share their location while in the car, and by integrating Glympse into Ford SYNC AppLink, we're providing drivers with a rich, real-time and hands-free way to share where they are," said Bryan Trussel, co-founder and CEO of Glympse in the press release. "At Glympse, we're dedicated to creating a more robust connected car experience, and working with Ford will help us to reach millions of consumers who will be able to just say, 'Send a Glympse' to share their current whereabouts, eliminating the need to send a text or make a phone call."

All drivers need to do to use the Glympse app is to install it on an iOS or Android-based smartphone. The vehicle will automatically find the app when the phone is in Bluetooth-mode or USB-connected according to Ford. Once the app is installed, drivers just need to press the SYNC voice button on their steering wheel, and say "Send Glympse."

Those who use the app can also send a Glympse to a friend's email or cellphone number, or even post on social networking devices like Twitter and Facebook. The app will be available for over 1 million vehicles including the 2013 Fiesta, Mustang, Fusion, Focus, and C-Max.

People can also monitor their vehicle's progress and ETA through a real-time dynamic map on their smartphone or computer according to Ford.

"Glympse is a great example of how smartphone app integration with the car can help us make the driving experience more convenient for our customers, thus adding perceived value to their vehicle," said Julius Marchwicki, global product manager for Ford SYNC AppLink in the press release. "By teaming up with an innovative company like Glympse, we are providing our customers with a dynamic way to share their location while removing the need to take their eyes off the road or hands off the steering wheel to pick up their smartphone."
