A total of 576,921 Audi vehicles are being recalled because of two unrelated technical issues.  The first issue is a potential fire risk originating from a coolant - pump problem involving six Audi models and the other issue is the possible raptures of air bags in 234,054 Audi cars.  

According to Auto Week, there have been reports in the last two years of overheating and smoldering under the hood of Audi cars caused by some blockade of the coolant pump. Particularly in the 2.0-liter TFSI engine, the coolant pump is cumulatively blocked by debris coming from the cooling system that may cause overheating of the pump and eventual vehicle fire.

This problem can be traced to 342,867 Audi vehicles in the U.S. that was sold from 2013 to 2016.  The following cars are included in the recalls: Audi A4 sedans produced from Feb. 20 to Dec. 8, 2015, Audi A5 cabriolets produced from March 9, 2012 to Dec. 16, 2016, Audi 5 coupes produced from March 8, 2012 and Nov. 19, 2016, Audi A6 sedans produced from April 4, 2011 to Dec. 22, 2014. 

Also included are the Audi Q5 SUV's that was produced between July 4, 2013 and Dec. 20, 2016 and the Audi A4 Allroad wagons produced from March 12, 2012 to April 1. 2016. The software to fix the problem is now on the way.

Correcting this defect is fairly simple and involves just a software update that will shut the power to the coolant pump when there is overheating. A corresponding warning light signal in the instrument panel will alert the driver.  

The other issue that triggered the Audi cars recall is on the airbags that can rupture even without impact or any pressure applied.  A damaged water drainage system in the sunroof can cause water to enter the airbag canister causing corrosion, eventual rapture of the bag, and injuries to the passengers. For this issue, only the 234,054 Audi Q5 SUV cars produced from May 28, 2010 to August 13, 2016 are subject to recall.
