It appears that Volkswagen could not catch a break after the recent emissions scandal matched with huge sums of fines. The German automaker is conducting a massive recall of, mostly, its premium brand, the Audi.

Volkswagen will recall almost 600,000 cars in the United States due to defects that could seriously lead to airbag malfunctions and fires. This is more of a preventive recall as there have been no actual incidents or deaths reported in the United States, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). 

Volkswagen's decision to recall more than half a million Audi brand was based on reported incidents that occurred in China and Israel in 2016. So to ensure that there will be no accidents or casualties in the United States, necessary repairs and parts replacement will be done by dealerships for free, according to Yahoo News.

The reported incidents or problems with the vehicles can be grouped into three: corrosion problem preventing the deployment of the airbag, faulty coolant pumps that could overheat and lead to fire and unspecified seat belt issues.

Vehicles under the Volkswagen brand, only the 2016 e-Golf, 2017 Golf, and 2017 Tiguan have airbag issues and fire hazard issues. Also, the corrosion problem affects more than 234,000 Audi A5 models built from 2011 to 2017.

Meanwhile, more than 342,800 Audi A4s, A5s, A6s, and Q5s manufactured in or after 2012 were found to have faulty coolant pumps. These pumps could overheat, causing fires. Also, some 5,901 2017 and 2018 models of Audi A4, A6, Q7, and Q5 were reported to have a faulty airbag and seat belt problems.  

Digital Trends reported that it was not specified whether Takata were the ones who manufactured the faulty airbags in the Audi models. This Japanese firm is at the center of the largest and complex product recall conducted in the United States.
