FOVE O: An Eye Tracking Virtual Reality Headset

The Japanese VR FOVE Inc introduced their latest FOVE O headset which headset has mounted a display at the Tokyo Game show last November of 2016. This is a second-generation Virtual Reality headset that features eye-tracking sensors that allow to watch activated interactions and foveated rendering.

The FOVE O features a high-end virtual reality headset that boasts a 2560x1440 OLED display and integrated 120Hz advanced eye tracking technology. The makers claimed that the infrared eye-tracking is accurate to less than one degree. It allows users to point out and select interface without the need for the tactile device. It also requires I/O of an HDMI 1.4 port, a USB 3.0 port, and two USB 2.0 ports. The display has only 70Hz refresh rate and the field of view is between 90 and 100 degrees.

The headset also takes advantage of foveated rendering because the game or app knows where the user is focusing and it can concentrate graphical processing on that specific point. It enables software to present virtual environments with a realistic depth of field-improving emotion underlying the eyes to relax when viewing objects at varying depths and by enabling fine control with the eyes. The FOVE VR headset significantly reduces simulation sickness through an elimination of unnecessary movements.

The FOVE O also added a complex system of LED illumination and camera within the headset. It also features an infrared camera that tracks the pupils and registers the slightest movements with each expressions glance and blink that uses intentions manifest in the virtual world.

With eye tracking, they can create a truly natural user interface that is intuitive and nearly subconscious in action. It enables the users to deeply interact with virtual reality world by translating subtle eye movements into emotional expressions which could be read and reacted too just like in real-life.

The FOVE O technology enables entirely new forms of expression, communication, and movements. Through FOVE artificial intelligence, it becomes more responsive and reacting to the player's most subtle intentions and providing more realistic interactions.
