After the shocking move to withdraw from the World Rally championship despite their huge success in the motorsport activities, speculations about the announcement  cleared after VW's sales and marketing boss, Jürgen Stackmann, revealed the reason behind their decision.

In a bold move by the German car company, they announced the end of their WRC days at the end of the 2016 season in an effort to expand their business strategy called Transform 2025+. The project aims to become a leading force in the e-mobility range and fix the Dieselgate fiasco.

Aside from the massive restructuring and cutting of costs in an effort for a brand recovery amidst the emission scandal, motorsport activities are put on hold, according to Auto Car. Huge investments  focused on e-mobility projects which are currently undergoing the first phase. By 2025, Volkswagen aims to become a leading force in electric vehicles. Electric cars will soon become the trademark of Volkswagen with the success of the Transform 2025+ e-mobility project.

Their ambitious project is not too farfetched. They have the means to achieve it and their recent decisions show their dedication to their e-mobility agenda. One of these sacrifices is the World Rally Championship withdrawal. According to Auto Car, Frank Welsch announced the end of the successful motorsport chapter of Volkswagen rally racing team to Volkswagen Motorsport in Wolfsburg. Explanations were given. According to Welsch, the Volkswagen motorsport team far exceeded the sporting goals in the World Rally Championship, but the focus of the company in the upcoming years is the advancement of their electric vehicle technology.

During the 2016 Los Angeles motor show, Stackmann divulged Volkswagen is eyeing the electric motorsport category. Volkswagen press releases hint on upcoming focus on electric technologies suited for motorsport activities. Although no official confirmations were released by the company, there are internal deliberations in the works with a possible participation in the Global Electric Rallycross series.

According to Auto Car, several car companies are interested in the electric motorsport category. Updates on its fruition are expected early this year.
