Chevy Bolt vs Tesla Model 3: What Keeps Tesla Models Ahead of Other EVs?

The Chevrolet Bolt was unveiled in Las Vegas, last January ahead of the Model 3's launch by three months. Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors revealed that its price will certainly compete with Model 3's price tag.

How much will the Chevy Bolt be?

Barra through her keynote speech announced that the Bolt's price will start around $30,000. Tesla's Model 3 on the other hand, according to Elon Musk, Tesla Motor's CEO, will cost around $35,000. Buyers should count on these announcements for now. Tesla recently announced that all their cars will have a full self-driving capability. It is not yet certain whether that will mean an increase in the price of the Model 3.

The upcoming 2017 Chevy Bolt though has been launched, has not actually been released yet. General Motors, in the end, may end up with tweaks that may most likely increase is EV's price.

What is the range of Chevy's Bolt?

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the Bolt's range will be around 238 miles per full charge, according to Forbes. This could cater up to five times the daily commute average of 40 miles. One can even use the EV without having the need to charge it daily.

Tesla's Model 3 is perceived to be at 215 miles per charge. This makes Musk's most awaited EV be behind by 13 miles.

How long does it take to fully charge a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt?

General Motors claim it to be a 25-mile output for an hour of charge. The battery according to their website can be replenished for nine and a half hours. Tesla, on the other hand, has "Supercharge" stations available all throughout the country. It claims that all one needs a 20-minute charge to fully replenish a Tesla EV.

The two models appear to be stiff EV rivals. However, the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3 cater to different user needs. On the other hand, Tesla's "Supercharge" stations are spread out in the entire country. This remains one of Tesla's advantage over other EV makers.

However, the outgoing administration has laid out plans to equip the nation with EVgo's or Electric Vehicle Charging stations. This will put all EVs on equal footing by then.
