When the concept car Bentley EXP 9F received criticism over its design, Bentley announced its intention to change the styling for the production version of its first ever ultra-luxury SUV.

The direct result of that redesign is the Bentley Bentayga which generates 600 horsepower, 664 pound-feet of torque that will move from a standstill to 62 miles per hour in 4 seconds flat and a top speed of 187 miles per hour making it the fastest SUV on the planet.

Initially, the twin-turbocharged W12 engine will be the only powertrain option for the Bentayga but, starting in 2017, it will have three additional options: a V8, derived from the Continental GT; a Diesel V8, derived from the Audi Diesel V8; and a Plug-In hybrid of a Continental's V8 mated with several electric motors plus a lithium-ion battery.

There are four Drive Dynamics settings on the Bentley Bentayga. The default is Bentley mode, which provides a comfortable driving experience. The Comfort mode, which lets the SUV glide effortlessly over uneven pavement or depression. The Sport mode, which provides sharper handling through winding roads and a throatier exhaust. Finally, the Custom mode which allows the driver  to personally configure engine and suspension settings according to preference.

On top of it all, this vehicle is a legitimate off-roader. It was challenged  in this year's The Easter Jeep Safari hosted by the Red Rock 4-Wheelers Inc. and it proved its worth on the trails of Moab where people were unanimously thrilled to see it being used and tested there, according to RR4W.

Aside from performance, the Bentayga also flaunts a high-end  interior featuring luxurious appointments, a 360-degree parking camera, an electronic night vision, 22-way power seats, an 18-speaker sound system and a 4-mode air suspension adjustment. It also has an array of sensors that provide real-time information about its surroundings plus it also has the capability to park itself.

In its initial launch, the Bentayga will be available with a four-seat or five-seat option, but a seven-seat will be available soon. Sales in 2016 were predicted at 3,500 units but the units were sold out in advance. When this happened, production was increased to 5,500 units.

Despite its high price tag, projected at $231,000 according to Car and Driver, the Bentayga is now Bentley's most popular model. A ground-bound C130 with the wraithlike waft of the Flying Dutchman.
