A minivan does not figure in Tesla's future vehicle line up just yet though a few enthusiasts at TopSpeed have nonetheless imagined what it would be like if the automaker does indeed venture into such a vehicle segment.
Tesla already has a minibus in the making which again would be based on the Tesla Model X platform. Not surprisingly, the same has also been used to base the Minivan concept as well. As is evident from the renderings, the wheelbase has been lengthened a bit to allow for more seats to be accommodated.
Further, the seats would likely be placed in a two plus two plus three configuration to seat 7 in all, or eight if the middle row is made a three seater. Then there is going to be some storage space at the rear to tow away luggage.
The batteries would certainly be placed below the floorpan as is the design norm with all Tesla vehicles so far. That is also beneficial in that not only does it allow for more space for passengers; it also leads to a lower center-of-gravity for the vehicle.
The exterior design as revealed in the rendition also includes a sliding door mechanism that is typical of vans. Tesla had stunned all with its unique gullwing door for the Model X and there sure will be something similar on offer with the Minivan as well. As TopSpeed have conceptualised, the supporting rail for the door would be hidden inside the door panel to allow for a cleaner exterior design.
Teslarati also imagined the supposed minivan would have a range of around 315 miles on a single charge when equipped with the 100 kWh battery. Acceleration will be brisk to say the least and can well turn out to be the quickest minivan out there.
Currently, Tesla produces the Model S and Model X while the more affordable Model 3 is slated for a launch towards late 2017. CEO Elon Musk has also stated they plan to launch a semi-truck and a minibus next once it stabilises the Model 3 production.
However, in the end, it must be said all of it are renderings and there is no conformity if Tesla would indeed launch a minivan anytime soon. It would make sense though if it does considering that minivans are a 500k strong market in the US.
