Audi will be introducing a new feature this Fall - a traffic light information system that will estimate how long drivers will have to sit at a red traffic light until it turns green.

The automobile manufacturer based in Germany has made the new feature available in select Audi models. At this time, the system is set up to work in several cities across the United States.

The Audi system receives real-time information from an advanced traffic management system, which observes traffic lights of the city. According to Motor Trend, this information is transmitted through an on-board LTE data connection and on servers from Traffic Technology Services, a partner of the company.

The 2017 Audi Q7, A4 and the A4 All-Road built after June 1 are the two Audi models that will be equipped with the new feature. If the model is equipped with an instrument cluster and a head-up display, drivers will be able to see the red light countdown as they approach the upcoming traffic light from there.

Las Vegas, Washington D.C., Seattle, and Portland will be the first cities to use the new feature, while other cities such as Los Angeles will begin using the system within the next two years.  Audi also says the new feature may be utilized to augment the stop/start systems and navigation services in the future.

The addition of a traffic light information system is indicative of the dramatic innovations occurring in the automobile industry. This new class of vehicles that interact with the outside world will improve driving quality in terms of security and convenience, according to The Verge.

These automated vehicles will also help improve traffic flow, making it easier for drivers everywhere to get from point A to point B in a timely manner, as well as make travel time more convenient.
