Porsche Is Launching A New Supercar Named '960' In 2019; Here's Everything We Know So Far

Porsche is set to introduce the “960,” a new supercar. Although the car is scheduled to launch three years ahead, it will expectedly feature several powerful components and advanced tech that the brand is famous for.

Porsche is apparently working on a new mid-engined supercar that will be placed between the 911 Turbo and the flagship 918 Spyder. The car will reportedly cost around $290,000 and is set to compete against the Lamborghini Huracan and McLaren 650S Spider.

Car Magazine was the first to reveal Porsche’s pending project, stating that the 2019 Porsche 960 will showcase a turbocharged flat eight-cylinder engine. Considering that the new supercar will use twinned versions of the 2.5-liter engine, its 5.0-liter turbo eight unit may churn about 700 horsepower. The combination between the power of the flat eight and all-wheel drive will allow the 960 to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 2.5 seconds.

Car Magazine also predicted that the Porsche 960 will weigh around 1400kg. The structure will be mainly made of aluminum, although other materials will be also be used, like titanium, steel and composites. The supercar is expected to have all-wheel steering, the newest multimedia system from Porsche, a rotary drive mode selector and active aerodynamics, among others. Although the production model will most likely be all-wheel drive at the start, which may up the total weight to around 1500kg, later rear-drive versions may subsequently become available.

Maxim noted that working on a doubled version of the same engine present in the Porsche Cayman and Porsche Boxster is sensible since it creates a solid link to classic models. Retaining the custom flat engine unit also shows its loyalty to tradition.

In the meantime, Porsche has been quiet about the recent rumors circulating the upcoming 960.

The company said that they will not comment on future product. At present, they are aiming to preserve the nameplate identity and combinations that they lack. They also plan to avoid efforts to prove a later claim based on their traditions.

However, they did hint that they might be working on something. It may also help that the company registered a trademark for the 960 name in 2015.

"There’s not been much on the topic of new models but, if you look, there are blank spots in our range – and you have to look at what the competition is doing and keep these things in mind,” said a company spokesman.

More updates and details on the Porsche 960 are expected soon.
