All-Electric DeLorean Arrives In Time For 'Back To The Future' 30th Anniversary (PHOTOS)

Students and faculty at Queen's University Belfast have designed an all-electric DeLorean to commemorate "Back to the Future" Day on Oct. 21, 2015, according to Green Car Reports.

In the blockbuster hit "Back to the Future II," Marty McFly travels in a DeLorean on Oct. 21, 1985 to the future date of October 21, 2015, reported the Associated Press.

Over the course of 18 months, faculty and students at the university restored a DeLorean and converted it to all electric, Digital Trends reported.

"The DeLorean was in a poor state of repair when we took ownership in January 2014," said Dr. David Laverty, who lead the restoration project.

"Since then our students have worked with experts within Queen's Electrical Energy laboratory -- one of the few university facilities in the U.K. dedicated to teaching and research of electrical generators and motors -- to develop the car's hi-tech electric engine," Dr. Laverty said.

Laverty added that the electric car comes with the original drivetrain from the DeLorean, and the students updated the Renault gearbox to be driven by a 270-horsepower electric motor. The update gives the car a top speed of 120 mph.

“In the future, more and more of our energy will come from renewable electricity — whether to power appliances in the home or our means of travel," Laverty said.

The all-electric DeLorean debuted at Belfast's Ulster Museum on Oct. 21.

“The electrification of transport is a major global challenge, so projects like the Queen’s Electric DeLorean are crucial in equipping young engineers with the knowledge and expertise to build the electric vehicles of the future," Laverty said.
