Honda announced early Monday morning that its president, Takanobu Ito, will no longer serve in that capacity as of this coming spring, amid controversy surrounding Honda's woes with Takata airbags. He will be replaced by managing officer Takahiro Hachigo.

Like Ito, Hachigo began his career with Honda as an engineer, and has overseen the development of key U.S. models, including the 1999 Odyssey minivan. Hachigo will become president and CEO of Honda in June; Ito led the company for six years, according to a statement.

The news comes after several historic recalls for Honda that linked faulty airbags and deadly automobile crashes. Although Honda was not the only buyer of airbags produced by Takata, it was among the largest affected by them, ultimately leading the company to a different supplier.
