Asked to comment about Acura's next-generation NSX supercar, which launched yesterday at Cobo Hall, comedian Jerry Seinfeld—who was on hand because of his tie-up with "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" and the brand—said of the slinky hybrid performance coupe, "It looks good!"
Had Mr. Seinfeld been in adjacent Joe Louis Arena, at the media introduction for the 2016 Ford GT around the same time, one could only imagine his reaction.
Our best guess?
"It's real, and it's spectacular."
This is the first look at the 2016 Ford GT: a successor to the iconic reimagination of a supercar to wear the Blue Oval. It's the most beautiful supercar on the show floor, and proof that there beats a supercar-shaped heart deep within Ford. Under the hood is a turbocharged V-6 that Ford avers will produce over 600 horsepower. The supercar is far more curvy and slippery than the model it replaces—and the icon from which that GT derived—and is far more beautiful than even photos would suggest.
Ford claims massive improvements and innovations in aerodynamics for the GT over the model it replaces, and the model on the show floor certainly looks like it could haul through the air. Ceramic brakes and super-sticky Michelin tires, as well as a rear spoiler that adjusts with road speed, are all part of the equation.
Like Ferrari's supercars, the GT will feature a steering wheel with manettino-style controls, meaning that most driver control functionality will be adjustable at an arm's reach.
Can you wait until 2016? That's when Ford plans to begin production of the GT, and then take it to the track to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June—honoring Ford's historic victory in that race a half-century ago with a complete podium finish.
