We called it: Hyundai decided to shake up the 2015 Detroit auto show with a surprise pickup truck concept: The Hyundai Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept. It's a mouthful of a name for an idea aimed at "urban adventurers." (Think "millennials.")
The Santa Cruz is a truck from Hyundai, representing a long-rumored concept that's now official. In shape and design, the Santa Cruz is reminiscent of a Subaru Baja, and its expandable bed—that features a slide-out drawer—apes the late Chevrolet Avalanche's setup. It's meant to blend the best of a truck's practicality with the car-like qualities of a jacked-up hatchback.
While the Santa Cruz may be a new idea for Hyundai, it uses a familiar powertrain: a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four with 190 horsepower, 300 lb-ft. of torque, supposedly good for fuel economy—an area where larger competitors lag.
Beyond the funky-looking shape, the center-locking hubs with yellow Brembo brake calipers make for an interesting combination on a crossover with a truck bed.
Not yet. For now, the Santa Cruz is still a concept.
