Ford Recalls 202,000 Vehicles for Steering Loss, Air Bag Problems

Ford has recalled more than 200,000 vehicles in five separate campaigns for potential issues ranging from steering loss to air bag failure.

Comprising 202,241 vehicles in North America, the announcement today has been related to one accident but no injuries, Reuters reported.

Most of the recalled models are in the U.S., according to the Detroit News.

The first campaign, which is the one connected to the sole related accident, affects 38,645 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car vehicles from model years 2005 through 2011 that may have steering issues.

The cars apparently weren't repaired properly in a previous recall intended to repair a steering shaft. For this recall, Ford dealers will inspect and repair the shaft as needed.

The automaker is also recalling 134,947 Flex and F-150 vehicles from model year 2014 that have passenger seats with possibly faulty sensors. The air bag may not deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury.

The Flex and F-150 repair will involve increasing space "between the manual seat frame and the seat track assembly" and recalibrating the system, according to Reuters.

In a third recall, Ford dealers will fix 960 F-150 pickup trucks that may have brake issues. Select trucks from the 2014 model year have a brake pedal position switch that can delay or not illuminate the brake lights when the pedal is depressed.

The automaker, which will advise dealers to remove and reinstall the problematic switch, has been advising affected owners not to use cruise control until after their vehicles are repaired. The pickups may require additional pressure on the brake to turn off cruise control.

The last two repair campaigns involve 25,597 and 92 Ford Transit Connect vehicles, respectively. The former, which involves vehicles from the 2014 model year, calls for repairs to fuel and vapor lines that have an increased risk of fire. The 92-vehicle recall will involve reinforcing the Transit's underbody structure to keep the fuel filter from becoming detached.
