Kia showcased its Niro hybrid concept today at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show for the vehicle's North American debut.

The "dramatic and modern" car features a hybrid electric powertrain and all-wheel drive, according to a Kia press release.

The Niro concept, which could be a future competitor in the B-segment, is a change-up from the typical smaller model.

"Ten years ago people wanted understated style in the SUV market, but increasingly, as more people migrate to the B-segment, they are looking for strong character and individuality," Gregory Guillaume, chief designer at Kia Design Center Europe, said in the press release.

Designed at Kia's studio in Frankfurt, Germany, the B-segment vehicle has an exterior painted in Nightfall, a stainless steel roof and 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Inside, the car boasts "luxury touches and high-quality materials," including front seats covered with a quilted fabric in Orbit Silver, said the press release.

"It may have the looks of a Dakar [Rally] contender, but Niro has a strong premium feel thanks to our innovative use of advanced and modern materials that mix brawn with spirit to deliver a playful vehicle ready to be part of anyone's active lifestyle," Guillaume said in the press release.

The Niro concept's rear seats can accommodate two more passengers or be folded down for additional space. The car also features Bluetooth and satellite navigation.

While still a designer's idea of a potential Kia model, the Niro has specifications that could make it a contender.

The car runs on a turbocharged, 1.6-liter engine that produces 160 horsepower and has a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. The hybrid plug-in system gives 45 horsepower to the rear wheels powered by regenerative braking.
