Chrysler announced this week that the 2014 Ram 1500 pickup truck has earned a four-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The rating applies for Ram 1500 two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive options, according to the automaker.

A five-star rating is the highest rating a vehicle can earn from the NHTSA.

The Ram 1500 earned five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the front crash test.

The two-wheel-drive vehicle earned four stars in the administration's rollover crash test, though the four-wheel-drive model earned three stars in the same test, according to the NHTSA ratings.

Safety features found inside the Ram 1500 includes anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and six airbags, like side curtain airbags.

The 2014 1500 also earned "good" ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the moderate overlap front crash test and in crash tests of head restraints and seats, according to the automaker.

The moderate overlap crash test was designed to see how a vehicle can withstand the impact of another vehicle, which weighs around the same amount, going under 40 mph.

The IIHS did report the vehicle only earned a "marginal" rating in the roof strength crash test however.
