Hyundai Recall: 27,500 Genesis Vehicles Called Back Over Brake Issues

Hyundai decided to recall approximately 27,500 Genesis luxury cars hours after the U.S. government opened an investigation into problems with the vehicle's brakes.

The automaker said the recall includes vehicles released for the 2009 through 2012 model years, according to the Associated Press.

Hyundai sold approximately 69,000 Genesis models, of which about 60 percent of them have already been repaired through a company service campaign that started last March.

Owners will be sent notices in the mail starting in November, and dealers will "pick up the cars and bring out a loaner vehicle," company spokesman Miles Johnson confirmed this week.

Anyone who wants to get their car looked at and repaired before the recall begins officially can call their dealer to set up an appointment.

Dealers will be notified to change brake fluid in the vehicles and examine the electronic brake control modules to see if they need to be replaced.

Fluid in the Genesis vehicles don't have a corrosion inhibitor, which means a gel can build up on valves in the braking system, causing "a loss of brakes," according to Johnson. Any brake control modules with gel on the valves will be replaced.

The recall includes vehicles built from April 1, 2008 through March 16, 2012, Hyundai said in a statement. The automaker decided on the recall after reviewing an investigation notice sent from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The NHTSA said it has received at least 23 complaints from drivers that had to push harder than usual on the brake pedal to make the Genesis stop, according to Reuters.

At least one crash has occurred as a result of the issue. A driver in Florida hit a stopped vehicle while another had to use the emergency brake to stop, sending the vehicle into a spin at a red light.

No injuries have been reported yet however, according to the NHTSA.
