Ford To Unveil Refreshed 2016 Explorer at LA Auto Show

Ford will launch the updated 2016 Explorer SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month.

Scheduled to arrive at dealerships next year, the new 2016 Ford Explorer will be unveiled on Nov. 19, Edmunds.com reported. The model marks its 25th anniversary in 2015 and has sold an impressive seven million vehicles since the Explorer first entered the auto scene in 1990.

"The innovative 2016 Ford Explorer will reach showrooms with a new look, added capability and additional driver-assist technology," the automaker said in a statement quoted by Edmunds. "It will continue to underpin the company's utility vehicle lineup--from the hot-selling Ford Escape to the newly updated, full-size Ford Expedition."

The Explorer's rivals in a crowded segment include the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Pathfinder.

SUVs and crossovers constituted 23 percent of Ford's global sales last year, compared with 17 percent in 2012, according to the automaker. The company expects that figure to increase to 29 percent by 2020.

The Explorer SUV is the bestselling midsize utility offering in the country, the automaker said.

This year's L.A. Auto Show runs Nov. 21-30 at the L.A. Convention Center. The event will feature 60 vehicle unveilings, 30 of which will be world debuts, said a press release.

"With this debut lineup, Los Angeles will deliver the best of what's to come in the automotive space and we're eager to see how it all unfolds," L.A. Auto Show President Lisa Kaz said in a statement. "The automotive landscape is ever-changing and we continue to be at the forefront of the groundbreaking news."
