MX-5 Miata Snags Spot in Guinness World Records as Bestselling Roadster

In its 25th year, the rear-wheel drive MX-5 Miata has earned a spot in the Guinness World Records as the bestselling two-seat roadster of all time.

The 2015 model is fast, efficient and spry at less than 2,600 pounds and a nearly 50-50 front-to-back weight balance, the Associated Press reported. A base Miata Sport of this model year starts at $24,765, putting it among the least expensive 2015 convertibles in the country.

Equipped with a 2-liter, four-cylinder engine, the 2015 Miata produces 167 horsepower with a manual transmission and 158 horsepower with the automatic option.

If a six-speed automatic transmission is included, the Miata's starting price bumps up to $27,025 including destination fees.

The upcoming 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will weigh even less than its predecessor at a mere 2,280 pounds. The redesigned model will be "the most compact of any generation MX-5 so far," according to Mazda.

The lighter version is designed to help Mazda adapt to ever restrictive fuel economy regulations, the automaker said. The 2016 update launched at events held simultaneously in Japan, Spain and the U.S early last month.

"Environmental and safety demands are much more stringent than they were when the first generation MX-5 was introduced 25 years ago, but the fourth generation stays true to the model's original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can," Mazda said in a statement.

The MX-5 Miata competes with models such as the Mini Roadster and Porsche Boxter.
