Kia Taps GT Fastback Concept for 2016 Lineup

Kia has a production version of its GT concept in the works that should hit U.S. showrooms in 2016.

The four-door fastback will challenge models including the Audi A7, BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and Porsche Panamera, Edmunds.com reported.

Unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2011, the concept was Kia's first rear-wheel drive offering and ran on a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the same powertrain expected to be featured on the production version.

Slated for a late 2016 launch, the GT will be mostly aiming for the American market, but it will also be available in Europe, where consumers can opt for a diesel version. The concept design was inspired by jet aircraft as well as the Kia Kee concept unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

"The so-called 'suicide' or rear-hinged doors of the concept are not expected to make it into production," Edmunds reported. "But shoppers can expect the fastback silhouette and a high-end cabin with a wide array of electronics systems."

No word yet on pricing, but the GT's likely competitors start in the range of $60,000 to $100,000, with the Porsche Panamera in the more expensive end.
