Buick Envision Compact Expected to Reach U.S. in 2015

Buick will expand its model line in 2015 with the addition of the Buick Envision. The compact crossover vehicle will be available with "mild hybrid technology," according to Edmunds.

Sales of the Envision in the U.S. are expected to begin during the third quarter of 2015, according to Edmunds, citing an industry insider "with knowledge of the plans."

Buick's new Envision is larger than the Buick Encore, yet smaller than the Buick Enclave, according to the automaker.

A hybrid turns the engine off when the vehicle is coasting, braking, or stopped. It then quickly restarts once the accelerator is depressed.

The five-passenger Buick Envision debuted for the China market back in August.

"We can't confirm anything, but clearly it is a very nicely designed and executed product that is very much a Buick," Duncan Aldred, vice president of Buick-GMC sales, told Edmunds.

Aldred added that the Envision would fit into "a big segment in the U.S."

"We have to look at (Envision), so that is what we are doing," he said during an interview at a press event in San Diego.

Buick will likely offer front-and all-wheel-drive version of the Envision if it does reach the U.S. product portfolio. The vehicle will be powered by a four-cylinder engine.

The Envision will compete with a number of similar vehicles like Acura RDX, Audi Q3, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Lexus NX, and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.

General Motors has not confirmed if Envision sales are planned in the U.S.

The Buick Envision debuted last month on the 2014 Chengdu Auto Show. The vehicle is manufactured in China by the Shanghai-GM joint venture.
