Xbox One Launches in China Following 14 Year Console Ban

Microsoft is officially the first major console company to make its device available in China in 14 years.

"This is a monumental day for us at Xbox and marks the first day of our journey in China," the Xbox team wrote in a blog post.

Xbox One consoles are now available at more than 4,000 retail locations in 37 cities around the People's Republic of China, meaning gamers and families have access to some of the best games and entertainment experiences spanning racing, sports, fitness, dance and adventure with music, karaoke, entertainment, and social media.

To commemorate the occasion, some of the most iconic buildings of the Shanghai skyline, like Oriental Pearl Tower, were lit up in Xbox Green.

"This milestone is significant for both our partnership with China and our global expansion plan. Every new market launch is unique and we're grateful to our fans for their patience and enthusiasm," said Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. "We will continue to work closely with our partner BesTV to bring exciting games, entertainment and app experiences to delight gamers across China."

Excited shoppers were seen lining up pretty early at some of the locations in the People's Republic of China to try getting their hands on an Xbox One.

"It has been rewarding to see new fans lining up at stores, connecting to Xbox Live for the first time, and enjoying the first wave of games available," the team said in the blog post.

The console was originally supposed to be released on Sept. 23 until last week when the launch was delayed by Microsoft to Sept. 29.

The first consoles were sold in Shanghai for 4,299 yuan ($699), more than the reported 3,699 yuan price tag, according to the BBC.

With the launch in China, Xbox One is now available in 41 markets.
