2015 Kia Sorento Earns Top Safety Rating from NHTSA

Federal regulators have given the 2015 Kia Sorento SUV five out of five stars for safety after conducting front, side and rollover crash tests.

The model has earned five stars overall for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a rating that applies to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, Edmunds.com reported.

The Sorento, which competes with the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Edge, Honda Pilot and Toyota RAV4, is equipped with six airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control and hill-start assist control in the base trim, according to Edmunds.

The 2015 model has not yet received a safety rating from the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In the NHTSA testing, the Sorento earned five stars for the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The Sorento compares with the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox and 2015 Honda Pilot, which each earned four-star overall safety ratings from the NHTSA, while the 2015 Ford Edge and 2015 Toyota RAV4 have not been rated.

Kia recently teased the redesigned 2016 Sorento crossover prior to its official launch, which is scheduled for next month's Paris Motor Show.

The revamped Sorento, which will be roomier to better accommodate passengers, will feature new technology for both safety and convenience, according to Kia.
