Samsung's Gear S Smartwatch Will Change The Way You Communicate

Samsung Electronics has unveiled what it has called the first smartwatch capable of making and receiving calls without a phone nearby.

The smartwatch, which Samsung has called the Gear S, is unique compared to its predecessors, due to its big 2-inch curved display.

It offers features like Wi-Fi connectivity, built-in GPS, and pedestrian navigation.

The smartwatch will run on Samsung's nascent Tizen operating system, according to Reuters.

Samsung said its Gear S will become available for purchase starting in October.

Pricing details will be confirmed at a later time, according to Reuters.

The world's biggest smartphone maker is trying to take advantage of the growing smartwatch market in order to make up for slow earnings in its mobile division, according to Reuters. The company experienced weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings, though many within the company have high expectations for its new smartwatch.

Samsung isn't the only company pushing wearable devices however. The *blanks main rival, Apple, is expected to debut its own device later on this year, and LG Electronics Inc. also announced today (Aug. 28) its new G Watch R smartwatch.

LG's device features a circular plastic OLED screen, a leather strap, and stainless steel frame, according to Reuters.

LG confirmed that its G Watch R will debut in major markets sometime during the fourth quarter. It hasn't confirmed a price for the device yet.
