Google's latest purchase is the Boston-based company Zync, which developed special effects technology used in such films as "Star Trek: Into Darkness."

The Zync team will join Google's Cloud Platform, the Mountain View, Calif.-headquartered tech giant announced in a blog post. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

The visual effects company provides tools to clients to render video, which is when an image is generated from a 2D or 3D model, or models, with computer software.

Because Zync uses cloud-based software for its effects, which have also been seen in "Looper" and "American Hustle," the company offers flexibility to clients that require 2D and 3D technology, CNET reported. The platform has a per-minute billing option that helps clients save on costs instead of paying for full hours they don't need.

"Together Zync and [Google's] Cloud Platform will offer studios the rendering performance and capacity they need, while helping them manage costs," Google product manager Belwadi Srikanth wrote in the blog post.

Since Zync formerly operated on Amazon computers, the acquisition means that Zync's Hollywood clients will have to transition from Amazon to Google, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Google has been working to bring more developers and companies on board with its own cloud platform, investing time and money in an effort to catch up with Amazon Web Services.
