2015 Corvette Stingray Can Reach 60 Mph in Just 3.7 Seconds

The new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will feature an even faster eight-speed automatic transmission, topping its predecessor's zero to 60 time by a tenth of a second, the automaker has said.

The eight-speed automatic, which replaces the current six-speed automatic, has an EPA rating of 29 miles per gallon on the highway, the same as the Stingray's seven-speed manual transmission option, Edmunds.com reported.

The 2015 Stingray equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission reaches 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, beating the seven-speed manual's zero to 60 mph acceleration time of 3.8 seconds.

"Those are hair-splitting advantages, to be sure, but laps of GM's challenging road-style race course here also underscore the new GM-designed and built automatic transmission's performance capabilities with eyeblink-fast manual upshifts that, at full throttle, Chevrolet claims are eight-hundredths of a second faster than the dual-clutch automated manual transmission in the 2015 Porsche 911," Edmunds reported.

The new transmission will additionally be featured on General Motors' Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups for the 2015 model year and full-size SUVS that run on 6.2-liter V8 engines.

The 2015 Stingray's ultra-performance version should be in showrooms in late December. Running on a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, the car has an engine 20 pounds lighter than the last Z06's, according to Edmunds.

Named "Hydra-Matic 8L90" by GM, the new eight-speed is manufactured at the GM factory in Toledo, Ohio.
