Ford Recalls 159,000 Hatchbacks, SUVs for Stalling Issues

Ford has announced a recall related to risk of stalling in nearly 160,000 Ford Focus ST hatchbacks and Ford Escape SUVs.

Comprising 159,395 cars, the recall affects Ford Focus ST and Ford Escape vehicles from the 2013-'14 model years, Edmunds.com reported.

The automaker is not aware of any accidents or injuries connected with the issue, which stems from defective wiring in the vehicles' 2-liter four-cylinder engines.

"In some of the affected vehicles, there may be engine wiring harnesses with splices that were insufficiently compressed during the supplier manufacturing process," Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker told Edmunds in an email. "Insufficient compression in the engine wiring harness splices may cause erroneous signals to the Powertrain Control Module that may affect engine performance.

"This may result in an engine malfunction indicator light, reduced engine power, hesitation or other engine driveability symptoms or engine stall. Engine stall while driving with no warning may increase the risk of a crash."

Of the recalled vehicles, around 133,000 were in the U.S. as of July 31, while about 25,400 were in Canada and 789 in Mexico, according to Edmunds.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn't yet posted information about the recall, which likely won't begin for several weeks.
