Feds Give 2015 Chevy Suburban Four Out of Five Safety Stars

Federal regulators have given the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 an overall safety rating of four out of five possible stars.

The redesigned SUV earned four stars in a front crash test, five stars in a side crash test and three stars in a rollover crash test from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Edmunds.com reported.

The NHTSA safety rating for the Suburban, which is available now in dealerships, applies to rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the model. The nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet conducted crash tests for the SUV.

The Chevy Suburban competes with the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada and Toyota Land Cruiser, according to Edmunds.

The base Suburban is equipped with six air bags, electronic stability control and a rearview camera. As an optional feature, bucket-seat models of the SUV can have front center air bags, something unique to the Chevy Suburban in its segment. The air bag inflates between the driver and front passenger in the event of a crash for added protection.

Another safety feature is the Safety Alert Seat, which is included in standard trim for LT and LTZ versions and available in an optional package for the LS. The Safety Alert Seat alerts the driver of a potential crash by pulsing different spots on the seat cushion.
