Young Boy Saved After Driving Toy ATV on NY Parkway

A 6-year-old boy managed to drive his battery powered toy car onto a New York parkway last weekend before being rescued by several motorists.

Western County police spokesman Kieran O'Leary said three drivers formed a slow-moving shield around the kid on the Bronx River Parkway, then pulled over and grabbed him along with his vehicle and moved them onto the shoulder, according to the Associated Press.

"A couple of cars were behind him, maybe another alongside him a little bit, somewhat protecting him from the possibility of being struck by a car that wouldn't have seen him in time," O'Leary said, according to the Associated Press.

The names of the boy and the rescuers have not been released to the public yet.

O'Leary confirmed that the boy was out with relatives in Mount Vernon park just 10 blocks from the parkway.

A cousin had been watching him but got distracted and the young boy took off in his blue-and-gray toy ATV, O'Leary said.

"It kind of just happened in the blink of an eye," the spokesman said.

The family looked for him for 20 to 30 minutes and then went to police at around 7:40 p.m. just as they started getting 911 calls that a child was on the Bronx River Parkway operating a toy vehicle.

Cars usually travel around 50 mph in that area.

"He took the Oak Street ramp going north, comes down the ramp, is in the acceleration lane and then actually in the right lane of the parkway for a brief time," O'Leary said.

The boy was taken to a hospital, and was determined to be OK before being reunited with his family.
