Honda Discontinues Fit EV, Insight Vehicles

Both the Honda Fit EV and Honda Insight have been discontinued.

Insight vehicles will be available at Honda dealerships around the U.S. through the end of 2014.

Production is scheduled to wrap up by the end of this summer, according to Sage Marie, an American Honda spokesman, who confirmed the news to Edmunds.

The automaker will still manufacture the Fit EV until later this fall, and will continue support customers through their lease period.

Honda had previously only committed to making 1,100 Fit EVs for customers in the U.S.

"Our path forward includes a new generation of electromotive technologies, including expanded application of our two-motor hybrid system," said Marie regarding the news.

The two-motor system debuted on the 2014 Honda Accord plug-in hybrid, and powers the Honda Accord Hybrid.

Honda will most likely make an announcement regarding the future of the Honda FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle sometime before the end of the summer.

The Honda FCEV concept debuted at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, offering Honda fans a glimpse at the direction the automaker will take for the FCX Clarity's successor.

The Honda Fit EV competes for sales against vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt.

Honda's Insight goes up against the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry Hybrid, and Toyota Prius, among other vehicles.
