Kia Recalls 52,000 Soul Hatchbacks That Can Lose Steering

Kia has issued a recall for nearly 52,000 Soul hatchbacks due to an assembly error that may cause the cars to lose steering power.

The 51,641 Kia Souls are from the 2014 model year and have not been connected with accidents or injuries, Edmunds.com reported.

"In the affected vehicles, the plug that secures the pinion gear to the steering gear assembly may loosen due to an improper application of thread-locking adhesive during the assembly process," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in its summary of the problem. "As a result, the pinion gear can separate from the steering gear assembly, causing a loss of steering, thereby increasing the risk of a crash."

The recall, which is expected to begin this month, will involve replacing the pinion plug with a new one with properly applied thread-locking adhesive.

Kia learned of the issue as the result of a warranty claim, according to the New York Times.

In two other announcements, Hyundai is recalling around 2,100 Sonata sedans, and Mercedes-Benz is calling back around 300 SL and SLK models that have faulty Takata air bags.

Affecting Sonatas from the 2015 model year, the Hyundai recall involves issues with a wiring harness that can cut off power. Hyundai learned of the problem, which results in the transmission lever sticking in the park position, when a dealer couldn't shift a new Sonata from park.

Mercedes-Benz has recalled the 2014 SL and SLK models for containing the potentially explosive Takata air bags that have been connected with the recall of at least 13 million vehicles worldwide since 2008.
