New Ford Fiesta Has Engine To Beat with No. 1 Fuel Economy

The 2014 Ford Fiesta has added a new three-cylinder engine option that gives the model the title of No. 1 for fuel mileage in its segment.

The Fiesta's thrifty gasoline engine with turbocharger makes it the top U.S. sedan for its model year when it comes to fuel economy, the Associated Press reported.

For the 2014 Fiesta with SE EcoBoost package, the four-door sedan gets 31 miles per gallon in city driving and 43 mpg on highways for a combined average of 36 mpg.

"The numbers aren't farfetched. The test Fiesta sedan with the little engine averaged 34 mpg even when the driver wasn't driving to maximize mileage," the AP reported. "This translated into a surprising travel range of 421 miles on one tank of gasoline at a cost of $45 at today's prices for regular unleaded."

The four-door 2014 Fiesta's fuel economy ratings rank up with select diesel-powered sedan offerings from BMW, Audi and Volkswagen.

Driving on 15-inch tires with steel wheels, the Fiesta is "agile, easy to maneuver and had better handling than expected" with "impeccable fit and finish, inside and out," the AP described after a test run.

When it comes to safety, the sedan received four out of five possible stars overall after federal crash tests; however, the new Ford Fiesta only earned two stars for side crash test results.
