BMW's M235i Beats Pricier Porsche, Corvette in Road Tests

BMW's M235i has topped the Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette with a score of 98 out of 100 after road-test reviews.

The high-performance car is now ranked highest of all time among BMW vehicles, beating the discontinued BMW 135i, Bloomberg News reported. The Porsche 911 Carrera S earned a score of 95, while the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray LT3 received 92 points.

The 911 and Corvette have both been redesigned and were described in the Consumer Reports review as having "excellent and near-identical acceleration and braking results."

While it scored better than the pricier Porsche 911 and Corvette, the M235i didn't quite reach the ranking of Tesla's Model S, which last year received 99 points out of 100 from Consumer Reports.

The magazine said the M235i offered both "tenacious cornering" on the track and driver comfort.

Built with a "classic BMW mold," the M235i starts at $50,400, which is $60,000 less compared with the Porsche 911 Carrera S from Volkswagen and $23,000 cheaper than General Motors' Chevrolet Corvette Stingray LT3.

"This really is a totally dual-purpose car," Jon Linkov, Consumer Reports deputy cars editor, told Bloomberg News in an interview. "This is a car you could drive to work every day of the week without it killing you. And then you could go take it to the track on the weekend."

Consumer Reports rates cars based on how they handle and how safe and reliable they are as well as for the quality of their interior finish.

While marketing the M235i, BMW has used some throwback to its classic campaigns.

"It seems like it has almost a direct lineage," to BMWs, Linkov told Bloomberg News. "This is just an inspiring, sporty car, plain and simple."
