Pinterest Streamlines Location Search for Place Pins

Pinterest, which added Guided Search to its desktop version this week, is also updating its search bar to help users find location pins more easily.

Place Search earlier allowed pinners to hunt for their desired pins within different location constraints, including a particular city or around the world; the update is intended to be more intuitive, TechCrunch reported.

The change combines the "what" and the "where," Pinterest engineer Jon Parise said in a company blog post.

"Our research showed Pinners were often providing both the 'what' and the 'where' in the first input box, just like they do when using our site-wide search interface," he wrote. "With that in mind, we set out to build a more natural place search interface based on just a single text input field."

Pinterest location is based on Foursquare data. Both Place Pins and Place Search are intended to bring in more users especially since Pinterest is still largely dominated by female users, according to TechCrunch.

Since Pinterest launched the Place Pins feature six months ago, more than one billion travel Pins have been pinned, more than 300 unique countries and territories are represented among pins, and more than four million Place Boards have been created by Pinners, the company said.

Pinterest launched Guided Search for mobile in April and on the desktop version this week. Altogether, pinners have made 750 million boards and pinned more than 30 billion items.

Letting users search within the billions of available pins should help Pinterest with its long-term plan to become monetized. Guided Search will help users navigate products that they want, making it easier for brands to sell items.
