Feds Give 2014 Dodge Journey Four Stars for Safety

The 2014 Dodge Journey has earned four stars for safety after crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On a scale where five stars is the highest rating, the crossover received four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test, Edmunds.com reported. The four-star designation applies to both the front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the model.

In standard trim, the Journey's safety features include "electronic stability control with traction control, antilock brakes, a driver-side knee airbag and side curtain airbags covering all three rows of seats," Edmunds reported.

The Journey competes in its segment with the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox, 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander and Toyota RAV4, according to Edmunds.

The car information site points out that the four-star safety rating puts the Journey on the same level as the Chevrolet Equinox and Toyota RAV4, which both received four stars. The Outlander earned five stars, while the Hyundai Santa Fe hasn't yet gone through the crash test ratings.

After Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, the Journey received ratings of "good" for all the tests, including the newer moderate overlap crash test. Mimicking a frontal offset crash, the moderate overlap crash test involves forces similar to two vehicles of the same weight colliding while traveling around 40 mph.
