2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Most Powerful Production GM Car Ever

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has been rated at 650 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque, making the vehicle the most powerful General Motors production car ever.

Official performance numbers were unveiled today (June 6) after weeks of speculation.

"The new LT4 engine builds on the design strengths of our previous supercharged engine and leverages the technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray - direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing - to take Corvette performance to an all-new plateau," said Jordan Lee, GM chief engineer for small block engines, in a statement, according to a company release.

The engine can be mated to a standard seven-speed manual transmission or the new eight-speed automatic transmission, according to the release.

GM has compared the car to the Porsche 911 Turbo S and the V12-powered Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.

"The V12-powered Ferrari F12 Berlinetta produces about 28 percent less torque than the Z06, despite offering about 12 percent more horsepower," GM said.

The horsepower number is significant, since the automaker was determined to deliver as much output as the Z06's new LT4 supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine as it did with the outgoing 2013 Corvette ZR1.

The ZR1's LS9 engine delivers 638 hp and 604 lb.-ft. of torque.

"It's also worth mentioning that the LT4's supercar performance numbers are achieved with an engine that is nearly the same size as the very compact LT1 engine introduced in the 2014 Corvette Stingray. The power density of the LT4 makes it one of the smallest and lightest 650-hp engines in the industry," Lee added.

The 2015 Corvette Z06 will reach dealerships during the fourth quarter of 2014.

Pricing for the new Corvette has not been announced.
