Mozilla Launches Flame Phone To Run Firefox OS

Mozilla announced Tuesday that its Flame reference phone is available for pre-order.

The company teamed up with T2Mobile, an independent designer and manufacturer, to create the Firefox OS-supporting device, VentureBeat reported.

The reference phone will use web-based apps through the Firefox system, instead of native apps like those used on Apple's iOS or Android.

"The Flame is representative of the mid-tier phone hardware Mozilla and its partners are targeting over the coming year," Mozilla said in an official blog post.

"It was designed for our developer and contributor community, so we worked with the manufacturer, T2Mobile to keep the price as low as possible. We're excited that we are able to bring a high quality reference device to our developer community at an affordable price."

T2Mobile will update the Flame phone with each new major version of Firefox OS, according to the blog post.

The phone, which is available for $170 including shipping, will have these specifications: "a Qualcomm dual-core1.2 GHz Snapdragon CPU; Wi-Fi; NFC; a 4.5 inch, 845-by-480 pixel display; adjustable RAM (256MB-1GB); 5 megapixel rear camera and 2 megapixel front camera; and 8 GB of memory (among other details)," VentureBeat reported.

The Flame will also be an opportunity for third-party app developers to work with Firefox OS and HTML5, Mozilla noted in the blog post.

With pre-order, the phone ships for free to anywhere in the world except Japan. It should arrive in about four weeks.
