BMW of North America is recalling over 2014 BMW X5 SUVs because the child-safety locks may disengage, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Approximately 6,400 vehicles are affected by the recall.

"The rear side door lock mechanisms may not have been manufactured to correct tolerances and when the inside door handle is pulled, the previously engaged child-safety lock can disengage," said NHTSA regarding the issue.  

BMW said to federal safety regulators that it first became aware of the issue during audit testing on a vehicle built with the Soft Close Automatic option.

BMW dealers are being instructed to inspect the rear side-door locks. Any affected locks will be replaced free of charge, according to the NHTSA.

Affected vehicles were manufactured from December 12, 2013 through March 10, 2014.

The recall is expected to begin before the end of May.

"A disengaged child-safety lock would allow the rear-seat occupant to pull the door handle twice and open the door while the vehicle is parked or in motion, increasing the risk of injury," said the NHTSA.

The automaker has not been notified of any accidents or injuries related to the recall.
