Ford Recall: 600,000 Escape, C-Max Vehicles May Contain Airbag Issues

Ford is recalling almost 600,000 vehicles over airbag issues, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall includes approximately 594,785 2013-'14 Ford Escape and C-Max vehicles. The vehicles may contain errors in the programming software, which could result in a delayed deployment of the side-curtain airbag

"In the affected vehicles, the restraint control module (RCM) may have errors in the programming software, which may result in a delayed deployment of the side-curtain rollover airbag," said NHTSA in its summary of the recall.

Ford told the NHTSA that consumer complaints or injuries have been reported due to the issue.

Affected vehicles were manufactured at the Louisville Assembly Plant from October 5, 2011 to February 14, 2014 and from the Michigan Assembly Plant from January 19, 2012 to February 24, 2014, according to the NHTSA.

Ford dealers are being instructed to reprogram the restraint control module.

"If the side-curtain rollover airbag is delayed in deploying in certain rollover circumstances, the risk of injury to the passengers is increased," said the NHTSA.

All repairs will be made free of charge.

The recall is slated to begin by May 26, according to the automaker.
