Microsoft Hints Surface Mini to Debut May 20

Microsoft has sent out invitations to members of the media for a May 20 event in New York City, where the company will likely unveil a new version of its Surface tablet.

"Join us for a small gathering," the software giant's message reads on the invite,

The invite also includes a noticeable Surface logo, meaning anything but a new Surface would be a letdown at this point.

Rumors have been speculated by a number of media outlets for a couple of months regarding the next Surface tablet.

Rumors include a scaled-down 7-to-8-inch screen.

The introduction of a smaller tablet would be a smart move for the company, considering that its 10.6-inch Surface and Surface 2 tablets are already larger than its Apple competitor, the 9.7-inch iPad.

Microsoft doubled its quarter-over-quarter Surface sales in the final three-month period of 2013, according to PCMag.com.

The company earned $893 million in revenue from shipments of its tablets in its fiscal second quarter, an increase of $400 million in the previous quarter.

Most reports have said a Surface Mini could be introduced sometime during the second quarter, according to PCMag.com.

Chinese electronics maker Vostrostone posted two Surface Mini accessories on Amazon in April, a thin Smart Cover case and mini-keyboard portfolio case, which only added fuel to the rumors.

Both features, which are available for preorder now, appear to be sized to fit just Surface Mini devices.

The Surface event kicks off at 11 a.m. in NYC.

Make sure to check back for more details once the tablet is unveiled officially.
