2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 SSV to Join The Police Force

Chevrolet has unveiled its 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Special Service Vehicle, designed specifically for police officers.

The police version of the popular Silverado full-size pickup truck will reach Chevy dealerships sometime this summer.

Pricing and an official release date has yet to be announced by the automaker.

The vehicle comes with features like high-output alternator and a big auxiliary battery designed to allow officers to operate lights and other useful equipment while the vehicle is parked with the engine turned off, Chevrolet said in a statement this week.

A big pickup designed for police officers is "something we're finding more and more agencies want, for the space and the room to store things," says Bob Wheeler, GM spokesman in a statement, according to the automaker.

Chevy's new Silverado SSV is equipped with the same production 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine.

Available features include: an open center console space for police equipment, and a vinyl rear seat, according to Chevy.

The automaker also sells custom versions of its Chevrolet SS sedan, with a surveillance mode service that cuts off all vehicle lights quickly.

This version of the sedan has been renamed Caprice, and was designed to keep undercover officers safe, according to the automaker.

Chevy sells other vehicles designed for police officers, including the Chevrolet Tahoe Special Service, the Chevrolet Express Prisoner Transport Van, and the Chevrolet Impala Police Vehicle.
